Formed in 2018, Brooklyn’s Gustaf have built a kind of buzz that feels like it comes from a different era. The art punk 5 piece are yet to release any recorded music, but rapidly established a reputation as one of New York’s “hardest working…and most reliably fun bands” (BrooklynVegan), and excitement about their danceable, ESG-inspired post punk has expanded outside of their city with remarkable effect despite their scant online presence. The band have found early champions in all quarters, catching the attention of luminaries like Beck - who had the band open for him at a secret loft party he played around the release of his latest album - the New York no wave legend James Chance, and have shared stages with buzzing indie acts like Omni, Tropical Fuck Storm, Dehd and Bodega, while word of mouth led to sell out shows when they played their first LA headline dates in late 2019. 

While recent events have curtailed Gustaf’s live schedule, the band have remained relentless as ever in 2020, and recently entered the studio with producer Chris Coady (Beach House, Future Islands, TV On The Radio). Gustaf’s first official release, the product of their work with Coady, is expected in the fall of 2020 via Royal Mountain Records (US Girls, Wolf Parade, Pottery).

On their third record, Gulfer return to their dexterous punk-inspired emo roots with an expansive outlook that can only come from working their way between self-doubt and having it figured out. The band never abandon their earliest influences - but build upon them, anchored by vulnerable lyricism and explosive, agile emo.

Produced by Chris Coady (Amen Dunes, Beach House, Future Islands) and recorded at two iconic studios (Sunset Sound in L.A. and Sonic Ranch in the Texas border town of Tornillo), Strangers Like Us marks a departure from the carefree indie-rock of Versteeg’s now-defunct band Hollerado. With its gracefully sparse arrangements, the album centers on Versteeg’s lyrical storytelling, revealing a narrative voice deeply attuned to the beauty in the ordinary and routinely overlooked. Despite that stripped-back approach, Strangers Like Us draws incredibly rich texture from Versteeg’s delicate melodies and warm vocal work, and from the spirited performances of guest musicians like Katy Goodman of Vivian Girls (on vocals), Charlie Spencer of Dizzy (keys, drums), and Versteeg’s Hollerado bandmate Nixon Boyd (guitar, bass). An album elegantly steeped in memory, Strangers Like Us navigates the often-painful act of looking back with grit and clarity and unbridled imagination.

While past METZ albums thrived on an abrasive relentlessness, the trio embarked on Atlas Vending with the goal to make a more patient and honest record—something that invited repeated listens rather than a few exhilarating bludgeonings. It’s as if the band realized they were in it for the long haul, and their music could serve as a constant as they navigated life’s trials and tribulations. The result is a record that sounds massive, articulate, and earnest. Bolstered by the co-production of Ben Greenberg (Uniform) and the engineering and mixing skills of Seth Manchester (Battles, Lightning Bolt) at Machines with Magnets in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, METZ deliver the most dynamic, dimensional, and compelling work of their career.

Le Ren’s slowburn songs paired with her deeply rich voice concoct the perfect recipe for some truly devastating songs - and her debut EP, Morning & Melancholia, gracefully fits that bill. Le Ren takes real-life tragedy and looks it in the eye, her voice never once faltering. 

Morning & Melancholia pays homage to Canadian folk heroes, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, while its curious, deadpan approach to lyricism feels like its dipping its feet into the Holy Trinity of songwriters - John Prine, Bob Dylan, Neil Young. Her lyrical couplets are as simply put as they are devastating. “So here we are at the end of all things // I guess I learned too late // that love can’t be the only reason to stay,” she sings on the closer "Love Can’t Be the Only Reason To Stay". It’s gut wrenching, but sure-footed.

On their 2018 Juno-winning debut, Baby Teeth, Dizzy reflect on the emotional landscape of post-adolescence. The Sun and Her Scorch is a departure: where Baby Teeth was fraught with the sadness of late teenage years, TSAHS muses introspective darkness and tackles “self-heartbreak,” as frontwoman Katie Munshaw describes it.

With TSAHS, Dizzy confess their messiest, darkest emotions and spin them into a collection of warm and vulnerable tracks that you can’t help but sing along to. “With the new album especially, I’m saying things I wouldn’t ever say to anyone out loud, and now I’m going to be singing them in front of hundreds of people,” says Munshaw. “I think the main thing I’d like people to take away is the idea that everybody probably has these negative thoughts about themselves sometimes, but it’s okay—you’re really not that bad. And if there’s an underlying philosophy to our band, it’s to be confident and believe in yourself no matter what.”

The full-length debut from Ellis, Born Again takes place in spaces both intimate and vast, ordinary and near-mythic: warm beds and lonely church pews, restless cities and desolate forests and the furthest reaches of the cosmos. Throughout the album, those spaces serve as the backdrop to Ellis’s sharply detailed and sometimes-painful experience of self-discovery, as well as the life-changing transformation echoed in the album’s title.
